UoB Global Brigades Medical Chapter

Welcome to the University of Birmingham’s Medical chapter of Global Brigades!

‘Empowering communities around the world to reduce inequalities’

Global Brigades is the largest student-led movement for global health. It uses a holistic approach to bring together medical, dental, water, engineering, public health, micro finance and business projects to empower developing communities so they can eventually reach self-sustainability. Global Brigades works alongside the communities, employs full-time in-country staff, but also relies on volunteers. This is where UoB comes in- we aim to get as many passionate students to take part in brigades to various countries, including Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Ghana and Greece.

When on medical brigade, you will be able to assist doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals in the GB clinic. Volunteers are designated to various stations including triage, medical and dental consultations, optometry, public health classes, obstetrics & gynae and pharmacy. So this is invaluable work experience for any students hoping to follow a healthcare career! We also hold water and public health days, where you can contribute to the other aspects of the holistic model: digging trenches to install running water and building latrines to increase the level of sanitation. When on brigade, you also have the opportunity to learn new languages, immerse yourself in new cultures and make friends from across the globe!

As well as the brigades itself, our medical chapter also holds plenty of charity fundraisers and socials throughout the year, including pub quizzes, bake sales, netball tournaments, cycling challenges, pub crawls and many more! Funds from these events go directly towards raising money for the supplies, medicines and healthcare services essential for setting up our clinic. So if you’d like to get involved with GB, but you’re unable to go on brigade, join the society as a fundraiser!

There is some skepticism surrounding volunteering abroad and ‘volunteer-tourism’. This is not what Global Brigades offers. As a volunteer, you will be immersing yourself in the community and working as a team to empower these communities. Global Brigades uses the holistic approach to enable the communities to be able to support themselves in the future: self-sustainability.

If you have any questions, or would just like to chat to some of our committee members about their experiences, then make sure you join our friendly zoom chat with the link at the top of this page.

Getting involved with GB is open to all courses, and there is no requirement for any medical experience! If you’d like to join GB, then make sure you sign up to the following form for more information:
