Saving Lives
More than 25,000 people living with HIV in the UK are not aware they are infected. Testing for HIV is the only way to improve this situation and promoting that service whilst reducing stigma is the best means of improving uptake. Likewise, 1 in 12 people worldwide are living with the Hepatitis B or C virus and every year, 1 million people die because of liver failure or liver cancer caused by Hepatitis B or C.
Saving Lives UoB is a Medsoc charity that seeks to promote the uptake of HIV and Hepatitis testing amongst at risk communities in the UK, as well as improve the general knowledge of HIV and Hepatitis, aiming to reduce the stigma surrounding these conditions. We do this by helping the national Saving Lives charity to conduct 'get tested' events in the Birmingham area, by sponsoring messages in football stadiums and radio shows, and through college educational programmes. Altogether when Saving Lives began, one in three of those with HIV did not know they were infected. This figure is now far lower, and we’re proud to be a part of the community that is making that change.
