Birmingham Widening Access to Medical Sciences

We are a large, friendly and enthusiastic society dedicated to widening the participation of students in Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacy and Nursing.

The students we work with aren’t likely to have parents who went to University and attend schools where few people go on to study courses such as Medicine and Dentistry. This means that they are often less well prepared for the competitive admissions process that students of some schools are well rehearsed in.

We address this issue by visiting local schools and sharing what it is like to study medical courses. We hold fun workshops to give students a taste of healthcare careers and we provide admissions advice for older pupils pursuing an application to Medical School.

In addition, we host annual Dr.eam conferences at Medical School, where Year 12s and Year 13s can attend a one day event preparing them for admissions tests, personal statements and interviews.

Finally, we work closely with the University’s outreach department and help provide mock interviews for Access to Birmingham applicants.
