Birmingham Widening Access to Medical Sciences

We are a large, friendly and enthusiastic society dedicated to widening the participation of students in Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacy and Nursing.

The students we work with aren’t likely to have parents who went to University and attend schools where few people go on to study courses such as Medicine and Dentistry. This means that they are often less well prepared for the competitive admissions process that students of some schools are well rehearsed in.

(An interesting read: http://www.bmj.com/content/328/7455/1541).

We help address this issue by visiting local schools to speak with pupils about what it is like to study medical courses. We hold fun workshops to give people a taste of a medical career and we provide interview and application advice for the older school pupils considering pursuing a medical career. In addition we provide an e-mentoring service.

We also work closely with the University’s outreach department and help provide mock interviews for A2B applicants.

Who is eligible to join BWAMS? Anyone from any background studying Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacy or Nursing.

We look forward to meeting you! Come find us at the Fresher’s Fair!
